Couleur Café(more) »rank: 113539by: Serge Gainsbourg
: :Largely unknown in this country, Gainsbourg has become the toast of the rock underground in recent years, with hipsters ranging from Beck to the Bad Seeds readily dropping his name. The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, Gainsbourg dabbled as a painter and pianist in the mid-'50s while sipping Pernod in the seedy nightclubs and cafes of Pigalle. He finally found his true calling in 1958 at the age of 30 when he launched his recording career by delivering romantic and risqué monologues about the Bohemian arts scene with a distinctive voice best described as a mix of Lou Reed and Maurice Chevalier. Putumayo Presents: Euro Groove(more) »rank: 7552by: Various Artists
:Album Description:Euro Groove is a collection of cool, contemporary grooves from the European continent's leading musicians, producers and DJs. Some of the artists on Euro Groove will be familiar to international audiences. England's Chumbawamba rose to unlikely stardom in 1997 with their single 'Tubthumping,' but have gone on to play music ranging from pop-influenced dance and world music to acoustic folk. The band is generally influenced by anarchist political stances and irreverent attitude to authority, as evident on 'Jacob's Ladder (Not in My Name),' initially released as a limited edition anti-war single in 2003. Germany's !DelaDap and 2raumwohnung are welcomed back to the ... |

Masked & Anonymous(more) »rank: 29927by: Bob Dylan
: :OK, so the movie to which it’s attached has been denigrated by most of the critics who’ve reviewed it. The soundtrack itself is a marvel that stands just fine on its own. Start with the four tracks by Dylan himself, including bristling new versions of 'Cold Irons Bound' and 'Down in the Flood' recorded with his remarkable touring band. Add gospel heavyweights Shirley Caesar shouting 'Gotta Serve Somebody' and the Dixie Hummingbirds offering country-soul salvation in 'City of Gold.' But these and performances by Los Lobos and the Grateful Dead are just a warm-up for the CD’s more inspired third: Dylan covers by ... |

Cambodian Rocks Volume 1(more) »rank: 12724by: Various Artists
:Album Description:Before the genocide in Cambodia in 1975, Cambodians traveled in and out of France and became very influenced by the western music. Can you imagine music echoed from the Beatles, Bee Gees, Monkees, Santana, Van Morrison, Scott McKenzie, Carpenters, and much more in Cambodian versions and lyrics?! These two collections prove it all with many more to be heard in the future compilation. These late-60's/early 70's era songs have a sound that's completely inexplicable despite the use of standard rock instrumentation and song structures. The blossoming night club scene in the urban areas and loads of bar bands during the '70s brought ... |

Marie opens the show with an outdoor rendition of "We Need a Little Christmas" and then moves into the studio where Kirk Cameron arrives on a snowmobile (fresh from rescuing a trio of blonde snow bunnies) to read "The First Christmas Story." Lee Greenwood performs "Christmas to Christmas" and later a duet with Marie. "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" is sung by Sally Struthers and daughter with help from the Osmond Boys--six stepping stones ages 4 to 12 who have the senior Osmonds' moves down pat. The adorable award, though, goes to Marie's 5-year-old son, Steven, who performs a rockin' version of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (clapping on the off-beat nearly the whole song).
Marie has a good, strong voice, but many of the songs are overproduced and melodramatic. This, most likely, is a product of the big, pouffy '80s (her hair and outfits are also bigger-than-life) rather than a reflection of her talents. The closing number, "O Holy Night," sung by Marie alone, is quite lovely. --Dana Van Nest
