Cronicas de un Laberinto(more) »rank: 134637by: Jaguares
: :Mexican rockers Jaguares favor jangly rock rhythms and arena bombast on Cronicas de un Laberinto, and that's not necessarily a great thing. Much of the album is filled with noisy, outdated arrangements that seem swiped from 1980s English-language hair bands--often a pitfall of the rock en espanol genre. Producer Adrian Belew only amplifies the effect, and any social or political messages are diluted. As a result, several of the disc's 14 tracks run together, making for an often monotonous listen. Vocalist Saul Hernandez does what he can, but there's no real fire or passion behind his delivery. Only a few tracks kick into ... |

Mi Sangre(more) »rank: 130603by: Juanes
: : It would be almost impossible to improve on the passionate perfection of Mi Sangre, Juanes' third and most accomplished solo disc. Its barrage of electric singles ('Para Tu Amor,' 'La Camisa Negra,' 'Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor,' 'Volverte a Ver') and equally compelling album tracks ('Amame,' 'Damelo,' 'Tu Guardian') still sizzle with energy. This deluxe Mi Sangre Tour Edition, however, offers a slew of treats that are tempting enough to entice a second purchase. A quartet of in-concert tracks find the Colombian performer in fine form and offer a preview of the inevitable live Juanes album. He even does justice to the ... |

Kinky(more) »rank: 120247by: Kinky
: :If Monterrey, Mexico is, indeed, the center of the Latin alternative-music universe, then native sons Kinky are doing a great job of spreading the gospel. The five-piece collective's self-titled debut is an infectious collision of wah-wah guitars, pounding dance beats, and home-cooked rhythm and brass. The band injects just enough authentic tang in its music to raise an eyebrow with the traditionalists, while playing songs demented enough to lure in fans of new-school Mexican electro-pop acts like Plastilina Mosh and Titan. Produced by British tastemaker Chris Allison, whose previous clients include Coldplay and the Beta Band, the album floats on a blissful groove ... |

Amores Perros (2000 Film)(more) »rank: 17569from: Universal Latino
: :The remarkable and violent Mexican film Amores Perros boasts an equally exhilarating soundtrack. Producer Gustavo Santaolalla has assembled two discs' worth of Latin rock and alternative music songs that are both included in and inspired by the film, interspersed with his own original instrumental pieces. The result is an epic, sometimes unwieldy collection, with contributions from usual suspects (Control Machete, Cafe Tacuba) as well as unexpected guests ('60s hit makers the Hollies, female rockers Dover). The first disc boasts past hits from artists, and the second disc includes songs inspired by the theme 'amores perros' (roughly translated as 'dog loves'). The Amores Perros ... |

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with Back to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh
Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, Back to the Future, Part III is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. --Tom Keogh
