: :Guitarist Tim Sparks ponied up one of the best marriages of solo guitar, jazz, and klezmer with his 1999 CD, Neshamah. With Tanz Sparks takes up a slightly different marriage, this time adding bassist Greg Cohen (a mainstay of John Zorn's Masada and countless other bands) and percussionist Cyro Baptista. Sparks's technique is phenomenal, with touches of John Fahey and Leo Kottke atop a thorough knowledge of the guitar's various traditions. He bends and slurs notes when playing uptempo tunes, giving them touches of post-1950s jazz guitar and surf music at once. Cohen holds a steady bass line throughout, and Baptista plays hand ...

Midnight Prayer

by: Joel Rubin

:Album Description:Midnight Prayer brings together two diverse, yet partially overlapping repertoires: the instrumental music of the klezmorim - the professional Jewish instrumentalists who graced every traditional Jewish wedding in Eastern Europe from at least the 16th century onwards - and the mystical nigunim (religious melodies of spiritual elevation) of the hasidic movement. Midnight Prayer creates its own sonic universe, full of depth, virtuosity, playfulness and introspection, exposing the many historical layers of traditional Jewish music through the lenses of the multifarious musical backgrounds of the band's members, ranging from classical to Gypsy to free jazz to contemporary art music. : Resulting in part ...

:Album Description:Although they were born in the Maghreb, most Arab-Jewish singers reside in France. The most unorthodox Mahgreb Jewish singer, Blond-Blond was intoxicated by music at a young age. After performing alongside Cheikh Zouzou, he went to Paris to take part in radio shows, singing Chevalier, Trenet, and Valderrama. In 1939 he went back to Oran, and in 1943 he was the star attraction at La Pergola, where he enjoyed huge success. By 1950 he was performing at El Djezir, the Parisian cabaret attended by such celebrities as Oum Kalsoum, Tony Curtis, Marlon Brando, Frank Capra, and Esther Williams.

:Album Description:When Moses received the ten commandements from God, his sister Myriam appeared, dancing and singing with a tambourine. The 'Nigun' (music), has continued to remain a focal part of Jewish daily life. To this day, the tambourine is called in Hebrew 'Tof Myriam', which means Myraim's drum. 'Jewish Spirituals' reflects the religious motivating happiness and the temperament from Timna Brauer. With this CD, it is the aim of Timna Brauer & The Elias Meiri Ensemble to present Jewish music tradition in all its richness and variety . The ensemble includes folk as well as classical and jazz musicians, who enrich the interpretation ...

Jazz is characterized by democratic group improvisation, so it's natural that artists like the Brooklyn-born pianist//keyboardist/composer Kenny Werner offer insightful and inventive critiques on American democratic society. On his Blue Note debut, Werner's impressive "cabinet" includes trumpeter/cornetist Dave Douglas, drummer Brian Blade, bassist Scott Colley, and saxophonist/clarinetist Chris Potter. With Tower of Power's Lenny Picket in the production chair, Werner's take on the unreality of American life is manifested in techno-savvy computer grooves, acoustic swing, strong contrapuntal exchanges, and genre-bending idioms. "Lo's Garden," "Inaugural Balls," "New Amsterdam," and "Lawn Chairs (and Other Foreign Policy)" are syncopated soapboxes ringing with Kraftwerk/James Brown/Herbie Hancock Headhunter-type rhythms and angular melodies, contrasted by the mournful aura of "The 13th Day," written for his late daughter, and "Kothbiro," from the film The Constant Gardener. Werner's bop, beats, and bytes will live on long after the polls close. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Originally recorded in 1989, Phish's second record is a brilliant blend of whimsy and wisdom that served notice to the world: these boys are tough to peg. "The Squirming Coil" is arena-rock bluster, "Reba" is winding art rock, "My Sweet One" is quick bluegrass, "Split Open and Melt" is a funky workout, "Oh Kee Pa Ceremony" is jazzed-up country boogie, "Lawn Boy" is lounge jazz, and "Bouncing Around the Room" is irresistible pop. Add to that "Run Like an Antelope," one of their most successful twisting-and-turning instrumental jams, and you have an eclectic yet digestible smorgasbord of styles. What saves Phish from crumbling under their own weight? A palpable sense of playfulness and sarcasm and musicianship that is both loose and demanding. --Marc Greilsamer
