Second Nature(more) »rank: 74083by: Carey and Lurrie Bell, Carey & Lurrie Bell
:Album Description:During a 1991 tour of Finland, lucky Scandinavian blues fans heard some of that magic as Carey and Lurrie began performing acoustic numbers together on stage as part of their set, often bringing the audience to their feet. The tour promoter, Chip Covington, decided he needed to capture this true blues acoustic miracle on tape. An impromptu recording session was set up and—with no rehearsal and no overdubs—Carey and Lurrie laid down the tracks for their first and only acoustic album, each in one take. The recording is timeless, sounding as vibrant and relaxed as the day it was recorded. The intimate ... |

Silver Tones: The Best Of John Mayall And The Bluesbreakers(more) »rank: 166283by: John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers
: :Something of an elder statesman of British blues, John Mayall is generally known as the guy who gave Eric Clapton his big break. However, compilations like Silver Tones highlight the best of Mayall's work and show why he deserves a place in the pantheon in his own right. His skill at several instruments more than makes up for his average vocal abilities, and if he's primarily known as a bandleader, there's a great deal to be said for providing the proving ground for musicians like Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Fleetwood. Silver Tones is rife with strong material, from the up-tempo smoothness of ... |

Deep Down(more) »rank: 138511by: Carey Bell
: :Now one of the few survivors of the Chicago blues harmonica scene that once included Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson, Bell has the control, full tone, and attack of his mentors. A former sideman for Muddy Waters, he was one of the last to learn his craft at the hands of the masters. This, his first Alligator album from 1995, updates several blues harmonica classics (Little Walter's 'I Got to Go,' Sonny Boy Willliamson's 'After You,' and a superb reading of Walter Horton's 'Easy'), without ever losing sight of Alligator's company credo of 'House Rockin' Music.' In truth, Bell is not a ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
