And This Is Maxwell Street

by: Robert Nighthawk, Various Artists

: :On Sunday mornings at Chicago's famous Maxwell Street open-air market, busking bluesmen would battle with hawkers, preachers, and dancers for coveted space. In 1964 filmmaker Mike Shea chronicled this bubbling scene for his landmark documentary And This is Free; in the process, he preserved stunning examples of raw, informal, gritty, undeniably urban blues, the best of which is included on these two revelatory CDs. Amazingly, legendary figures like Robert Nighthawk and Carey Bell were as likely to show up as any number of local gospel singers and blues pickers. Nighthawk's tenacious saw-toothed guitar work and Bell's swooping harp are well documented here, as ...

by: Lazy Lester

: :At the very least, harmonica master Lazy Lester deserves points for longevity--he's the last living pioneer of swamp blues, a style whose notable players also include Slim Harpo and Lightnin' Slim. With All Over You, Lester proves that he's still got what it takes--clean, skillful harmonica playing, and a voice as smooth as a barrelful of molasses and laid-back as a Louisiana July. If the material here isn't exactly new--fans will recognize the classic 'I'm a Lover, not a Fighter,' among others--Lester's performance shows that he hasn't lost any of his skill to the years, or to his long absence from performing. --Genevieve ...

Blow'n the Blues: Best of the Great Harp Players

: :There's something human about a well-played harmonica, filled with life's breath. Otis Spann, Muddy Waters's great bandleader, once called the harmonica the mother of all instruments. And this collection of modern harmonica players is a mother. (Although without either of the Sonny Boy Williamsons or Little Walter, this album is decidedly not definitive.) Eighteen of the nineteen tracks are from the 1960s, and we can hear the tone baton being passed from Big Walter Horton to Charlie Musselwhite, from Junior Wells to Paul Butterfield, though set against radically different backdrops. James Cotton's 1966 tracks are a highlight, filled with the excitement of stepping ...

by: James Cotton, Billy Branch, Charlie Musselwhite, Sugar Ray Norcia

: :It's harmonica heaven as a quartet of hard-blowing harpists with experience stretching from the classic Muddy Waters band to contemporary rocking-blues units strut their stuff in a friendly competition. The legendary James Cotton is the main attraction, and he lives up to his reputation, ripping through his individual showcase 'The Hucklebuck' and dueling successfully on the group cuts. Fellow veteran Charlie Musselwhite, who displays another side of his talent by playing guitar on the acoustic 'If I Should Have Bad Luck,' is also in fine form. The younger members of the quartet, Chicago stalwart Billy Branch and former Roomful of Blues frontman Sugar ...

: :Charlie Musselwhite's is the voice of experience. One can hear it on every note of Continental Drifter, where the relaxed feel of the experienced bluesman is evident in the main harmonica riff of 'Little Star' and the smooth, Delta-style guitar of 'Blues Up the River.' Several of the songs have a strong Cuban-Brazilian feel, and Musselwhite is joined on several of these by friend Eliades Ochoa and his band, Cuarteto Patria. Musselwhite's primarily known as a harmonica player, and it's easy to hear why on this album; whether he's spicing up the Cuban-blues mix of 'Sabroso' or soloing over the jumpy rhythm of ...

: :Sugar Blue is best known for his signature harmonica riff--at once bluesy and tuneful--on the Rolling Stones' hit, 'Miss You,' but he has recorded with everyone from Stan Getz and Bob Dylan to Willie Dixon and Johnny Shines. The diversity of those experiences helps account for the pop melodicism, jazzy harmonics and bluesy note-bendings of Sugar Blue's harmonica playing, but only his individual talent can account for the pure, piercing tone he achieves on the instrument. His latest album, 'Blue Blazes,' includes his own interpretation of 'Miss You' as well as versions of Dixon's 'Back Door Man' and other blues standards by James ...

Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi

The Olsen twins are turning 16, and they're celebrating with this collection of party games and, you guessed it, driving lessons. The good news is that if you can help them get past the obstacles and pass the test, they'll take you out with their new driver's licenses to a variety of fun minigame activities, like rock climbing, riding Jet Skis, surfing, ATV quad racing, and shopping for clothes. Earn points in the party games and spend them to upgrade the car and unlock cool tunes and cooler outfits.

It's not very often that a game aims to be fun and realistic while instilling a sense of personal involvement and responsibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winners Circle does that within the theme of horseback riding. Players compete in such equestrian events as dressage, jumping, and cross-country, and learn the basics of caring for a horse. The game offers a practice mode, which lets riders master the controls and explore a course before entering events, and an adventure mode with large forest and island levels where players can play minigames or just simply explore.
