The Blues 'White Album'(more) »rank: 143400by: Various Artists
: :This blues tribute to one of the Beatles's most important recordings has little to commend. The one truly outstanding cut is Joe Louis Walker's slow, soulful squeeze through 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps,' where his voice and lead guitar cry and moan, bringing the song's deep currents of pain to the surface. T-Bone Wolk and Anders Osborne stick to the original arrangements of 'Don't Pass Me By' and 'Happiness Is a Warm Gun,' coming up with suitably amiable and dark results, respectively. Singer Maria Muldaur, joined by guitarist Chris Duarte, gives 'Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da' a blithe Memphis soul treatment. But the rest suffers from ... |

Backspin: A Six Degrees 10 Year Anniversary Project(more) »rank: 31887by: Various Artists
: :World music purists have never been happy with the Six Degrees label's pan-cultural mash-ups or the fact that western rock has a global influence. They'll take no comfort when India's MIDivil PunditZ lay their digitized-Bollywood sound on Led Zeppelin's 'Four Sticks,' nor respite when Spain's Ojos de Brujo conduct a flamenco romp through Bob Marley's 'Get Up Stand Up.' It's all part of the concept of Backspin: A Six Degrees 10 Year Anniversary Project. Each of these artists, all associated with Six Degrees, covers a song that had an influence on them. Like Jimi Hendrix with 'All Along the Watchtower,' the best make ... |

King Crimson Songbook, Vol. 1(more) »rank: 131296by: The Crimson Jazz Trio
:Album Description:Very, very few players have covered King Crimson repertoire and no-one of prominence (other than The Schizoid Band and Andrew Keeling’s orchestral arrangements) has attempted more than one or two pieces. There have been honourable renditions & representations but, until now, without significantly adding to my understanding of Crimson material. The CJ3 have respectfully & irreverently taken 8 Crimson classics, repositioned them in the musical spectrum, and delivered their first Songbook with superb musicianship in service to wit & invention. I have heard, as if for the first time, Schizoid, TOAPP, Catfood, Starless, Ladies Of The Road, I Talk To The Wind, ... |

Evangeline Made: A Tribute to Cajun Music(more) »rank: 100926by: Various Artists
: :Cajun music might not need a tribute--after all, it has held its own and remained popular for a very long time now--but the music on this disc is glittering enough to shine in any company. Ann Savoy (the grande dame of Cajun music who assembled this project) and Linda Ronstadt pair up to gorgeous effect on two songs, Richard Thompson offers his own particular edgy style to 'Les Flammes d'Enfer,' Nick Lowe sounds convincingly Arcadian on 'Arrette Pas la Musique,' and Maria McKee brings a transparent soulfulness to her contributions. Surprisingly, however, no one tackles the Cajun anthem, 'Jolie Blonde.' There are plenty ... |

Folkways: A Vision Shared - A Tribute to Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly(more) »rank: 91736by: Various Artists
: :One of the more creative, successful tribute albums, A Vision Shared was originally released to coincide with a PBS program that premiered in 1988. Packing some serious heavyweights onto one CD, the record features covers of Guthrie and Leadbelly tunes by, among others, Little Richard, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and U2. The 14 tracks consist of mostly well known tunes, and it's fascinating to hear what the artists have done to them. Particularly exciting is a supercharged version of Leadbelly's 'Rock Island Line' by Little Richard with Fishbone and U2's take on Guthrie's 'Jesus Christ.' --Ian ... |
