: :Metallica's music has never been called ethereal, much less soft. The Celtic Tribute to Metallica succeeds at creating the unexpected. Traditional instruments such as fiddle, mandolin, concertina, bouzouki, accordion, banjo, and pennywhistle combine to form a swirl of highland magic. A selection of Metallica's best songs is rendered into unique instrumentals that remain faithful to the house that Jack built.

: :No musician ever applied a gentler touch to songs of murder, sex, and salvation than Mississippi John Hurt. The country bluesman enjoyed a career revival through the folk festival boom of the early 1960s, and his influence continues to ripple, as this varied and vital tribute attests. Produced by Peter Case (who teams with Dave Alvin on 'Monday Morning Blues'), the album's renewal of classic Hurt extends from the deadpan double entendres of 'Candy Man' delivered by Steve Earle and son Justin to Taj Mahal's trademark lilt on 'My Creole Belle' to a surprisingly straightforward 'Stagolee' by Beck. Amid a roster of luminaries ...

: :Studio: Red Distribution Release Date: 02/06/2007 Run time: 82 minutes :The renaissance of Brian Wilson continues with MusiCares: A Tribute to Brian Wilson, a 2005 concert featuring timeless tunes by the Beach Boys maestro and his various lyricists, rendered here by a variety of artists, including Wilson himself. The singer-song matches here are uniformly outstanding, as the performances tend to bring out influences that were more latent in the Beach Boys' original versions. The Backstreet Boys (who knew?) highlight the doo-wop and Four Freshmen flavors of 'When I Grow Up (to Be a Man),' easily negotiating the song's complex harmonies; Shelby Lynne ...

: :Most of the artists on this tribute to Sam Phillips's legendary Memphis label have chosen to cover the rockabilly hits. It isn't until a genuine Sun rockabilly artist--the late Carl Perkins--makes an appearance, joining Van Morrison for Howlin' Wolf's 'Sittin' on Top of the World,' that things briefly get bluesy. Instead, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Chrissie Hynde, Tom Petty, and Bryan Ferry all offer up loving, note-for-note recreations of early Elvis tunes, even if it was Jerry Lee Lewis, not Elvis, who recorded a cover of 'Don't Be Cruel' (Ferry's tune) for Sun. On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
