Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he's merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. :Album Description:Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2007. :This is the infamous 'somebody-put-something-in-the-Waters' LP from 1968. A relative hit for Chess, it features the exalted bluesman bellowing over psychedelicized arrangements that owe more to Steppenwolf than Willie Dixon. Waters himself complained that the drums were too busy and the lead guitar sounded like a cat's meow. Not a bad critique. --Steven Stolder

: 's Best of 1999:With a gently self-assured voice and a guitar style like quiet water, Kelly Joe Phelps does imbue his music with a certain Zen-like quality. There's something quite meditative about Shine Eyed Mister Zen, especially on the song 'River Rat Jimmy,' which evokes a contemplative mood. --Genevieve Williams Amazon.com:It's great--Kelly Joe Phelps has all of the earnestness of a singer-songwriter without the overbearing holier-than-thou-ness that infests so many of them. It's a testament to his skill as a musician that he lets the music speak for itself; sure, there are message lyrics on Shine Eyed Mister Zen, but one needn't spend ...
