:Album Description:Japanese pressing of the 18th album in this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's remarkable career features the earliest release. It's her first album ever to bear the credit Produced by Bonnie Raitt. The album features sounds ranging from the swampy groove and electronic loops of 'Deep Water' to the crystalline lament 'I Don't Want Anything to Change'. Throughout, Raitt's unparalleled slide guitar playing is pushed to sizzling new heights. Songs like 'The Bed I Made' and the edgy, angular 'Crooked Crown' address complex emotions-thorny, adult themes. The first single lifted from the album is 'I Will Not Be Broken'. EMI. 2005. ...

: :Ry Cooder has done some of the best soundtracks in the last 20 years or so (I wouldn't live without The Long Riders or the two-disc Music By Ry Cooder compilation, either)--most of them superior to the movies. (Sorry about that, Walter Hill--but it's true.) His lonesome, steel-guitar music for Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas is one of those cases where the movie and its music are equally great. I can't imagine one without the other. Every time I hear Cooder's opening theme, I see those wide western spaces and Travis (Harry Dean Stanton) wandering through them; and every time I see a still ...

: :This two-CD set won't cause you to throw out your copy of Fillmore East, but it is at very least a worthy companion to that 1971 classic. Recorded the previous year at the famed Cincinnati venue (but not released until 1991), Ludlow catches the band in the moments just before their peak. Some of the material will be familiar to fans, but this collection adds gems such as John Lee Hooker's 'Dimples' and the blues classic 'I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town' to their recorded repertoire. And if you thought the 33-minute 'Mountain Jam' on Eat a Peach was extensive, you ...

by: Ronnie Earl & Duke Robillard

: :Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl are among blues guitar's hottest pistols, but their first studio union is no showdown. Although Robillard is steeped in all aspects of technique and Earl is a pure 'soul' player, their styles overlap in the Texas and Chicago schools, which grant both giants plenty of space for elegant and biting single-note solos, daredevil string-bending, and chugging rhythms. Robillard sings two numbers and 'Mighty' Sam McClain, whose red-clay voice is the perfect foil for their emotional fretwork, guests on Earl's heartbroken epic 'A Soul That's Been Abused.' The real mojo, however, is in the instrumentals, where these virtuosos who ...

The KX-TGA270S from Panasonic is an add-on extension handset designed for use with KX-TG2700S, KX-TG2720S, KX-TG2730S, or KX-TG2740S Expandable Cordless Systems. By utilizing the 2.4 GHz frequency band, as well as Frequency Hopping Digital Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology, the KX-TGA270S provides crisp, clear reception even at significant distance from the base.

An illuminated keypad makes dialing easy in the dark, while a headset jack gives you the option of hands-free operation. Four-way conferencing allows you to talk with multiple people, while a two-way intercom lets you communicate with family and friends near the other phone.

With call waiting, you won't miss any important calls, while Caller ID (with subscription to telephone company services) means you can avoid those calls you would rather miss. A great way to expand your current Panasonic phone system, the KX-TG2700S also features six selectable ring tones as well as a handset volume control. Panasonic also provides a one-year parts and labor warranty.

Wonderful Town is a terrifically fun musical, but do you really need this recording? The answer will be yes if you fall within one of these two categories: (a) You collect recordings of the show and must own them all or (b) you're a huge fan of Brooke Shields. The actress replaced Donna Murphy in the lead role of the 2003 Broadway revival, and did a creditable job bringing Ruth Sherwood to gawky life during her five-month run. Shields performs over the same instrumental tracks you can hear on the revival's prime recording. (Jennifer Hope Wills replaces Jennifer Westfeldt as Eileen Sherwood; the rest of the cast is unchanged.) From a purely vocal point of view, the switch wasn't an upgrade--Murphy is among Broadway's best stylists after all--though Shields is far from being an embarrassment. She may not have the technique, but her comic gusto is winning. Still, this CD remains for completists only. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
