Let Me Play with Your Poodle(more) »rank: 114032by: Marcia Ball
: :Long, tall Marcia Ball kicks off her new album with the title track, 'Let Me Play with Your Poodle,' a rollicking, double-entendre blues number originated by Tampa Red. In Ball's version, she reinforces the salacious lyrics with a punchy horn section, her own second-line New Orleans piano solo and her own giddy vocal. And Ball doesn't need to dip into blues history for a bawdy song; she proves she can write her own on 'The Right Tool for the Job.' The rest of the album isn't quite so blunt, but whether she's admitting she 'Can't Trust My Heart' or declaring there's 'Something I ... |

Blues + Jazz(more) »rank: 84451by: Ray Charles
: :Combining Charles's earliest and most blues-oriented work for Atlantic with some of his best jazz-oriented work in a 2 CD package, this set shows us both that Ray Charles could function admirably in either of two worlds. Or maybe it says that, no matter what the style, Ray Charles was always his own category. Either way, he shows his greatness pays no mind to categories. The blues disc offers up true classics like 'The Sun's Gonna Shine', and the jazz disc shows off both Charles and alto saxophonist David 'Fathead' Newman as fantastic, bluesy soloists of the first water. --Skip Heller |

All three principals sing eloquently and with a fine sense of the opera's structure and context. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is in even better voice than Domingo, and Giorgio Zancanaro heads an expert supporting cast. The Covent Garden Chorus, directed with distinction by Michael Hampe, gives a memorable impression of the revolutionary mob. Julius Rudel's conducting is totally idiomatic. --Joe McLellan

Lotfi Mansouri spared no effort or expense in making this production special. He personally directed the staging, and handpicked an outstanding cast (right down to the very young and then-unknown Ben Heppner in the small role of Hervey). The visual elements--sets, costumes, and camera work--are also handled with great care, and Sutherland's positive response to this dedication can be sensed in her performance as the unfortunate wife of King Henry VIII. James Morris is best-known as a Wagnerian singer--perhaps the leading Wotan of our time--but he is equally at home in many of the villainous roles that are the fate of bass- baritones (Iago, Scarpia, Don Giovanni). In this sinister tale of an innocent woman ruthlessly destroyed, he shows a surprising knack for the bel canto style. Judith Forst is also excellent in the role of Jane Seymour. --Joe McLellan
