Louis and Keely!(more) »rank: 28737by: Louis Prima & Keely Smith
: essential recording:Louis Prima and wife Keely Smith released several collaborations, but this 1960 import reissue showcases one of their very best. Recorded for Dot Records in 1960, Louis & Keely features the duo performing swinging romantic tunes such as 'Night and Day,' 'I'm Confessin' (That I Love You),' and 'And the Angels Sing.' Smith's vocal talents are at their peak (she overpowers Prima on several numbers), and the band is in top form. Prima was a master at transforming tried-and-true vocal standards into powerful jazzy numbers; this disc is no exception. The album closer 'Bei Mir Bist Du Schon' is one of ... |

Breaking It Up!(more) »rank: 67270by: Louis Prima & Keely Smith
: essential recording:The bulk of Louis Prima's finest, Vegas-era output for Capitol has yet to be reissued on CD, but this record--a true oddity in his discography--has somehow found its way onto the digital format. Catapulted to Columbia Records on the success of his self-released single of 'Oh Babe'--eventually covered by Wynonie Harris, Kay Starr, and Lionel Hampton, among others--Prima recorded a handful of novelty sides under the production helm of Mitch Miller in the early '50s. This 1958 LP collects these tunes and showcases Prima's poppier, pre-swing sensibility. Heavy on the kitsch and light on the R&B and jazz, this is Prima ... |

Cocktail Mix, Vol. 3: Swingin' Singles(more) »rank: 169488by: Various Artists
: :This 18-cut compilation reaches its peak with Sarah Vaughan's rendition of 'One Mint Julep,' which retains the arrangement Quincy Jones wrote for Ray Charles's version. Horns blaring, rhythm pumping, Vaughan goes completely over the top in her recounting of a night of passion that led to a lot more than she bargained for--a baby and a shotgun wedding, to be exact. Good to hear that she still managed to get out once in a while. And in fine style. --Rickey Wright |

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with Back to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh
Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, Back to the Future, Part III is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. --Tom Keogh
