The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust(more) »rank: 2160by: David Bowie
: essential recording:After flirting with heavy guitar rock ('The Man Who Sold the World') and lighter pop ('Hunky Dory'), Bowie found middle ground on Ziggy Stardust. The creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona would live on well after Bowie shed the alien skin, marking the first rock concept album by a sexually ambiguous, artistically bent musician who confounded critics at every turn. A blend of dramatic strings, swaggering saxophones, jagged guitars, and theatrical arrangements, the album's darker rock numbers like 'It Ain't Easy,' 'Moonage Daydream,' 'Ziggy Stardust,' and the irresistible 'Suffragette City,' still serve as solid excursions into the future (then and now) ... |

The Who Sell Out(more) »rank: 2727by: The Who
:Album Details:Japanese Limited Edition Issue of the Album Classic in a Deluxe, Miniaturized LP Sleeve Replica of the Original Vinyl Album Artwork. Different Cover essential recording:The Who Sell Out's pirate-radio concept goes south in the album's second half--the Who ran out of time before they could write enough faux commercials--but it still remains in many ways their best and most entertaining album. Pete Townshend and John Entwistle supply song after great song, and along with Keith Moon play them with power and focus. The classic single 'I Can See for Miles' is matched on at least a handful of tracks, including the ... |

The Division Bell(more) »rank: 1687by: Pink Floyd
: :As Roger Waters's solo career set into a sunset of suspiciously self-serving Wall revivals and compelling if modest-selling solo efforts, his former band became one of the few outfits in the soft live market of the 1990s to burnish its stadium-filling appeal. But their recorded output wasn't quite so rosy. As all post-Dark Side of the Moon albums must have a Big Important Theme, The Division Bell is vaguely about levels of separation (did you say, duh!?), with more than one not-so-opaque lyrical jab at the estranged Waters. But there's a sense that the band may have put more thought into its trademark ... |

Permanent Waves(more) »rank: 2449by: Rush
: essential recording:One of Rush's finest moments, second only to Moving Pictures. This album includes two classic songs, 'The Spirit of Radio' (which has one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in all of rock) and 'Freewill.' There's also the epic-feeling 'Jacob's Ladder,' as well as 'Entre Nous,' a sort of intellectual love song (if such a thing can be said to exist). The introspective 'Different Strings' and the anthemic 'Natural Science' (which clocks in at over nine minutes) close the album. Though there are only six songs on Permanent Waves, it's enough; the material is rich enough that more of it would ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
