: :Director Curtis Hanson chooses a lineup of vintage rock and R&B for the musical side of his screen adaptation of Michael Chabon's brilliant Wonder Boys. Foremost is Bob Dylan, who contributes a new rocker, 'Things Have Changed,' as well as cuts from Blood on the Tracks, Oh Mercy, and Time Out of Mind. These 13 cuts do a fine job of limning Michael Douglas's lead character's confusion, regret, and weary-to-the-bone ambivalence. Smartly sequenced--soul giants Little Willie John and Clarence Carter fit perfectly alongside the likes of Dylan, Lennon, Van Morrison, and Neil Young--Wonder Boys the album is a stellar example of hand-in-glove movie-music ...

:Album Description:From trip-hop to Britpop, downbeat to Latin metal, 'CSI: Miami The Soundtrack' is as edgy and evocative as the TV series from which it has been spawned. Not surprisingly then, the CBS show won the 2003 BMI TV Music Award. Along with one immortal rock band, The Who--whose 'Won't Get Fooled Again' is the series theme song opening each episode--the album's most familiar artists are Oasis and Massive Attack. Lamb, one of electronica's most innovative groups, is a downtempo vocals-oriented drum'n'bass duo from Manchester ('Gabriel' is a radio edit of the track on 2001's 'What Sound'). Baxter, from Sweden, also combines pop ...

: :Music plays a huge part in director Wes Anderson's meticulously crafted world. For this movie set in India, he's come up with a typically wide-ranging, mind-boggling soundtrack largely culled from the mid-'60s and early '70s, despite the fact that the film is set in the present. Though Indian cinema has come to mean Bollywood for most Americans, Anderson pays tribute to art filmmaker Satyajit Ray by including music from some of his movies, mines the early (1963-1970), lesser-known oeuvre of James Ivory, and features traditional Indian tunes. This may throw fans of Bollywood's more frantic style at first (even if the upbeat go-go ...

: :In 2001, five Roma (the correct term for the people known as 'Gypsies') ensembles joined forces for a never-to-be-forgotten road trip called 'The Gypsy Caravan Tour.' Fortunately, filmmaker Jasmine Dellal (American Gypsy) and her crew, which included Albert Maysles of Gimme Shelter fame, rode shotgun, and the result was an astonishingly intimate and revealing documentary. Members of Maharaja (Rajasthan, India), Antonio el Pipa's Flamenco Ensemble (Andalucía, Spain), Esma Redzepova & The Stevo Teodosievski Ensemble (Macedonia), Fanfare Ciocarlia (Romania), and Taraf De Haïdouks (Romania) were captured on and offstage as they gradually coalesced into a mutually appreciative team. Featuring interviews with band members plus ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
