:Album Details:BONUS DVD (PAL) essential recording:McKennitt's recordings always have the quality of a spiritual sojourn; her songs are those of a seeker, whether she's setting Yeats, Scripture, or her own words to her compositions. It's this that attracts people to her music, and The Book of Secrets is no exception, whether it's the lazy rhythms of 'Marco Polo,' the sober joy of 'The Mummers' Dance,' the poignancy of 'Skellig' or 'Dante's Prayer,' or the drama of Alfred Noyes's 'The Highwayman.' 'The Highwayman' is a particularly strong effort, especially in comparison to her earlier setting of 'The Lady of Shalott'; McKennitt has become ...

: :For listeners with a sincere interest in the broad variety of music loosely aligned under the New Age banner, Pure Moods II will strike your ears as something less than a high-concept showcase for the genre and more as a mulligan stew of easy-listening favorites. This is not necessarily a bad thing; yet a recording marketed to the general public as a comprehensive, current, state-of-the-art overview of atmospheric music shouldn't include such ill-fitting oddities as George Benson's 'Breezin',' a lite-funk relic from 1976, or 'Emily' from jazz saxophonist Dave Koz. Happily, the 77-minute, 16-track sampler offers far more items of interest than irritation. ...

: :Loreena McKennitt's 'songs for the season' are haunting for their beauty and her fascinating voice. Blending traditional Irish music with worldbeat and New Age-like instrumentation, McKennitt's arrangements are at once elegant and eloquent, enchanting and familiar, whether she's singing 'Coventry Carol,' 'God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,' or 'Good King Wenceslas.' 'Snow,' adapted from a 19th-century poem, and the traditional 'Seeds of Love' are so lofty and deep they reach almost mystical places. --Martin Keller

: essential recording:Mixing a variety of styles with a Celtic base, this was McKennitt's breakthrough album and remains one of her most musically interesting. 'All Souls Night' begins the album, with dance-like rhythms and McKennitt's wonderful voice singing about the Celtic New Year. Other features include a musical setting of Tennyson's 'Lady of Shalott', which, while not as sophisticated as Noyes' 'The Highwayman' on The Book of Secrets, is an enchanting listen. There's also an interesting rendition of 'Greensleeves' and the Spanish-flavored 'Tango to Evora', as well as the haunting 'Courtyard Lullaby' and the wistful 'The Old Ways'. A setting of words from ...

:Album Details:BONUS DVD (PAL) essential recording:McKennitt's travels through Spain and Morocco flavor this album with a distinctly Mediterranean tinge, from the opening 'The Mystic's Dream,' with its dancing percussion arrangements, to 'Marrakesh Night Market,' to 'Full Circle' and the instrumental 'Santiago.' 'Marrakesh Night Market' is an especially strong performance, with an interesting musical texture; the balalaika, udu drum, and dumbek are played alongside a synthesizer. As usual, McKennitt has set a poem to music, this time Yeats's 'The Two Trees,' with a lovely introduction on the Uillean pipes. There's also 'The Bonny Swans,' a traditional lyric, and the CD closes with Shakespeare, ...

These are traditional English and Scottish songs mixed with orginals by this elegant modern folk artist. :This is not your father's Christmas album. Loreena McKennitt's primary instrument is the harp, but her primary technique is to take a traditional folk song and supersize it with strings, modern rhythms, and lush orchestration. It's a style that works ideally with this material. Her takes on 'The Wexford Carol' and 'The Stockford Carol' will make you rethink holiday songs. Other highlights include 'The Seasons' and ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
