: essential recording:Sinatra already had one youthful career behind him by the time he made Songs for Swingin' Lovers! His were no longer the lustrous pipes of the kid crooner from Hoboken--the voice that made bobbysoxers swoon--but from the first notes of the opening track ('You Make Me Feel So Young') he seems to have discovered a musical fountain of youth that fully justifies the exclamation point in the album title. There's a buoyant new spring in his step, accented by Nelson Riddle's lighter-than-air arrangements, that makes the Columbia records of Sinatra's younger days sound stiff and stodgy in comparison. Even chestnuts like ...

: :Essentially the sequel to 1957's Where Are You?, this 1959 release finds Sinatra once again singing tales of woe to the lush accompaniment of Gordon Jenkins' classically influenced arrangements. Torch songs this time around include 'Just Friends,' 'None But the Lonely Heart,' 'Stormy Weather,' and 'When No One Cares,' all delivered with minimal vocal acrobatics and maximum ache by Ol' Blue Eyes. Some fans may prefer the sparer arrangements of such Nelson Riddle collaborations as In the Wee Small Hours, but this still makes for superior late-night listening. --Dan Epstein

: :This four-disc, 97-track collection compiles the highlights of the first major period of Frank Sinatra's solo career, beginning with 1943's 'Close To You,' and ending with 1952's 'Why Try to Change Me Now.' Sinatra was the preeminent singing idol of American teenagers (the female ones, at least) during this period, thanks to the dreamily smooth crooning style he exhibits here on 'People Will Say We're in Love,' 'I Should Care,' 'Embraceable You,' and dozens of others. Sometimes the still-callow singer isn't up to the material ('Ol' Man River'), sometimes the material isn't worthy of the singer ('The Hucklebuck'), and Sinatra would certainly go ...

: :Underrated, at least in comparison to the better-known In the Wee Small Hours and Sings for Only the Lonely, 1957's Where Are You? is another excellent collection of melancholy torch songs, including 'Lonely Town,' 'The Night We Called It a Day,' 'I Think of You,' and 'Maybe You'll Be There.' As on those records, Sinatra doesn't sing so much as breathe, never overwhelming the fragility of the compositions with excessive displays of emotion. Of course, this approach just makes the songs sound that much sadder. This was also the first record Sinatra recorded in stereo, and Gordon Jenkins's lush string arrangements are obviously ...

The KX-TGA270S from Panasonic is an add-on extension handset designed for use with KX-TG2700S, KX-TG2720S, KX-TG2730S, or KX-TG2740S Expandable Cordless Systems. By utilizing the 2.4 GHz frequency band, as well as Frequency Hopping Digital Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology, the KX-TGA270S provides crisp, clear reception even at significant distance from the base.

An illuminated keypad makes dialing easy in the dark, while a headset jack gives you the option of hands-free operation. Four-way conferencing allows you to talk with multiple people, while a two-way intercom lets you communicate with family and friends near the other phone.

With call waiting, you won't miss any important calls, while Caller ID (with subscription to telephone company services) means you can avoid those calls you would rather miss. A great way to expand your current Panasonic phone system, the KX-TG2700S also features six selectable ring tones as well as a handset volume control. Panasonic also provides a one-year parts and labor warranty.

Wonderful Town is a terrifically fun musical, but do you really need this recording? The answer will be yes if you fall within one of these two categories: (a) You collect recordings of the show and must own them all or (b) you're a huge fan of Brooke Shields. The actress replaced Donna Murphy in the lead role of the 2003 Broadway revival, and did a creditable job bringing Ruth Sherwood to gawky life during her five-month run. Shields performs over the same instrumental tracks you can hear on the revival's prime recording. (Jennifer Hope Wills replaces Jennifer Westfeldt as Eileen Sherwood; the rest of the cast is unchanged.) From a purely vocal point of view, the switch wasn't an upgrade--Murphy is among Broadway's best stylists after all--though Shields is far from being an embarrassment. She may not have the technique, but her comic gusto is winning. Still, this CD remains for completists only. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
