Here in the Real World(more) »rank: 186993by: Alan Jackson
: essential recording:If Alan Jackson's 1989 debut album were to be released in a crossover climate, it's debatable if anyone at country radio would give it a shot. 'Too country now for country' might be the verdict. With its mournful warning that in the real world 'cowboys don't always get the girl,' the title ballad was an instant classic. Jackson wrote or cowrote every song on the album but one, including the semi-autobiographical 'Chasin' That Neon Rainbow' and 'Home.' In the liner notes, he referred to George Jones's death-of-country lament 'Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes.' 'I don't know if I can fill 'em, ... |

: :Alan Jackson's eighth album for Arista has nothing to prove, no broad statements to make, no shocking musical switch-ups. In laying back into acoustic shuffles like 'Right on the Money' and pedal steel- sweetened ballads like 'Gone Crazy,' Jackson disarms with subtle delivery and a back-to-country-basics band. He penned half the album, and remarkably, his compositions are so strong one wishes he'd handled the entire record. The best non-original is a Kieran Kane's I'll Go On Loving You, the sexiest thing Jackson's ever recorded, with an elegantly dark string arrangement, and a deadly serious spoken delivery; the worst is 'What a Day Yesterday ... |

: essential recording:As a superstar who's revered by both the young country audience and traditionalists, Alan Jackson is at his finest when he's steers clear of trifles like 'Chattahoochie' and takes those younger fans to school. Here he does just that by paying respects to Hank ('Midnight in Montgomery'), swearing allegiance to George Jones ('Don't Rock the Jukebox'), and calling out all those newcomers who've decided it's time to get twangy now that country's hot ('Gone Country'). All of it pales next to 'Here in the Real World,' however, as perfect a honky-tonk weeper as mainstream Nashville has produced in 30 years. --David ... |

ITV 50: The Album(more) »rank: 271190from: EMI
:Album Description:Celebrating 50 years of ITV with favorite tracks from much loved programmes over the last 50 years. Virgin. 2005. |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
