Countless Westerns have centered around the theme of a young turk coming into town to try to take down a legendary gunslinger. Well, for the past couple of decades, Willie Nelson has turned that imagery on its head, attracting countless younger artists eager to soak up some of his musical mojo and infuse the master's work with some of their own spirit.

Moment of Forever, matches Willie with Kenny Chesney. The very idea of these seemingly disparate characters coming together is intriguing enough on paper. What really counts, however, is how it works on disc -- and work it does, with Chesney's production bringing out Nelson's natural warmth and grace.

While he's written some of the most enduring tunes of the past few decades Nelson has long been considered one of the premiere song interpreters of his time, infusing a surprising array of tunes with his singular personality. This record includes a hushed, poignant version of the Kris Kristofferson-penned title track and a super-heated, album-closing version of Bob Dylan's 'Gotta Serve Somebody.'

The songs that Nelson wrote for Moment of Forever take on many of the same topics addressed in that pair of tracks -- taking stock of a life well lived and considering the possibilities of what might lay down the road. On songs like the sweetly twanging 'Always Now,' Willie comes across like a man who's come to terms with most of those issues, coming to the conclusion that 'there never was a used to be...it's always now.'

Other highlights include Willie's take on Dave Matthews' 'Gravedigger' and tracks like 'Worry B Gone' -- where Willie trades verses with Chesney The easy vibe carries over to the gently celebratory 'I'm Alive' -- on which Nelson marvels at life's simple pleasures.

Rating: - * Willie Nelson Forever ... Moment of Forever is the most solid album by Willie Nelson in many many years. This is on par with some of Johnny Cash's late work with Rick Rubin and provides more evidence that some artists just get better with age. Nelson's voice is as good as ever and has a richness and depth that some of his more recent works haven't had. His pairing with new-country idol, Kenny Chesney seems to have breathed new life into Willie. There isn't a bad track on the album, but my favorite, by far, is his cover of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody". As a Dylan fanatic I must admit that Willie's version is better than Dylan's version. So soulful and heartfelt. Willie also strikes gold with his cover of "Gravedigger". The video for this song is just flawless. Also notable are the title track, "Moment of Forever" and "I'm Alive". And Nelson is indeed Alive on this collection. Even The Bob Song, which I initially hated has grown on me and I certainly appreciate the silliness of the song. Overall, I think this has to go down with Nelson classics like Red-Headed Stranger and Phases and Stages as his best work to date. We can only hope that Nelson continues with this momentum and keeps making such great records. Rating: - * Willie at his best ... Willie's voice and attention to detail have grown over the years. Great way to spend an hour listening to him and his music. Rating: - * Willie can't make a bad record! ... I remember listening to "Stardust" and "Red-Headed Stranger" in high school, and while "Moment of Forever" isn't his greatest work, it still is very good. Like the man himself, "Moment" is a mixture of the sacred, like "Louisiana" and "Always Now," and profane, the "Bob Song" and "You Don't Think I'm Funny Anymore" - all thoroughly enjoyable. I was touched by "When I was Young and Grandma wasn't Old," given the relationship Willie and his sister had with their grandparents. I wonder if that song, which he didn't write, has some special meaning for him. And "Gravedigger," could that become a regular part of his repetoire now that he's turned 75? I hope Willie lives forever, or at least till he's 103, and he keeps turning out albums like this, the aural equivalent of comfort food, regularly. Rating: - * Willie makes it seem effortless ... Willie Nelson's music, with this most recent CD, "Moment of Forever," has such a way of touching us, making us feel our most human and most transcendent selves. That is a priceless gift. He does this with his ensemble, his guitar and his voice, making it look so very easy, while the patterns and creativity of a lifetime are behind all of it. Rating: - * Willie's newest offering should not be overlooked ... Willie Nelson's 2008 record 'Moment of Forever' is right up there with records like 'Stardust,' 'Phases and Stages' and 'Red Headed Stranger' as his best album. Released on Lost Highway in January of this year, it's one of his finest efforts. He's released over 100 studio records during his long career dating back to 1954, so I'll let you do the choosing for his best record. But anyway, the songs here are incredible. His cover of Bob Dylan's 'Gotta Serve Somebody,' the humorous 'When I Was Young And Grandma Wasn't Old,' and 'Louisiana' (which would fit perfectly on a record like 'Red Headed Stranger,' in my opinion) are songs that any Willie fan should check out. Overall, if you want to hear one of Willie's finest efforts, check out 'Moment Of Forever.' It's his newest, but one of his best. Highly recommended for any Willie fan. A classic from Willie. ENJOY!!!
