The Very Best of Otis Redding(more) »rank: 953by: Otis Redding
: :No other Otis compilation quite satisfies the way the old double-LP best-of does, but never mind: any way you hear Redding's many great moments is a good one. The Very Best splits ballads and up-tempo stuff half-and-half, letting you hear the great one's humanity in every mood--the pile-driving rock of 'Respect,' the preaching fervor of 'Try a Little Tenderness,' the nascent reflection of 'Dock of the Bay.' A record collection with no Otis is a poor thing: here's yours. --Rickey Wright |

Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story 1961-1977(more) »rank: 7624by: Various Artists
: :Take Me To The River is a selection of 75 songs that tell the story of the golden era of Southern Soul 1961-77 over 3 CDs, with full notes and lavish illustrations in a 72 page full-color book, all lovingly encased in some rather special deluxe packaging. It's hard to contest any assertion that, while great Soul music was undoubtedly made right across America during the 60s and early 70s, the best of it was probably made in the Southern states and, specifically, in musically-enlightened cities and towns such as Memphis, Miami and Muscle Shoals. Here are 75 tracks that collectively do ... |

The Very Best of Aretha Franklin: The 60's(more) »rank: 3903by: Aretha Franklin
: :This 16-track disc and its companion piece (Volume 2) do a great job of recapitulating Aretha's singles career at Atlantic. Some of the most compelling music ever recorded, these sides bring forth the best of one of the great singers. Whether all but rewriting 'Respect' ('That girl stole my song,' an admiring Otis Redding said) or barely masking the pain behind 'Call Me,' she tells some of the truest stories around. And what a piano player. --Rickey Wright |

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You/Including Respect(more) »rank: 4885by: Aretha Franklin
: essential recording:This is the album on which Aretha finds her voice. She'd previously recorded for another label, but this Atlantic debut created the sound that has come to define her. The tracks read like a greatest hits collection: 'Respect,' 'Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,' 'Dr. Feelgood,' 'Baby, Baby, Baby,' 'A Change Is Gonna Come,' and the title track. She's alternately pumped full of soul or scraping her inner being to find more. A classic. --Robert Gordon |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
