Living & The Dead(more) »rank: 2387by: Jolie Holland
: :With a vocal style hailed by the Village Voice as 'sultry and sweet, despairing and lonely', Jolie has experimented in the past with various settings for her unique, jazz-inflected voice. This time working with such collaborators as M. Ward (She & Him, My Morning Jacket) and Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), she has embraced both the rocking side of her roots, and the compositional possibilities of the studio, multi-tracking her voice for the first time. The results have intensified the evocative moodiness of her music but also brought out a rollicking looseness. |

Orphans [Fold-out Digipak with 24-page booklet](more) »rank: 3527by: Tom Waits
:Description:The three disc set is packaged in a fold-out digipak with a beautifully designed 24-page booklet, including neverbefore-seen Waits’ photographs. :With these astounding 54 songs (plus two bonus tracks) Tom Waits has added a vital new work to his catalog. The title, Orphans, refers to the songs either being from a range of outside projects, various impulses, and whims, or simply not having found a place on the albums for which they were intended. While that scenario has constituted a stopgap measure for lesser artists, this set stands alongside Waits's finest work. He has shaped it into three separate discs, each one separately ... |

Mermaid Avenue(more) »rank: 1922by: Billy Bragg & Wilco
: 's Best of 1998:A ghost, a band, a troubadour. Easily the strangest co-op project ever, and easily one of the finest and most evocative albums of the year. British socialist and folkie Billy Bragg was given unprecedented access to Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics. Teaming up with alt-country band Wilco and quoting from more than 50 years of country, folk, and rock music, Billy and company bring Guthrie's politics, poetry, and morality to the end of the century and prove he's as necessary now as ever. --Tod Nelson Amazon.com essential recording:When you first heard that Billy Bragg and Wilco were teaming up to set ... |

Lifeline(more) »rank: 2707by: Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals
: :At the end of a nine month European tour, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals landed in a Paris recording studio and completed their new album, Lifeline, in just seven days. The result: a soulful masterpiece with beautifully direct lyrics, undeniable grooves and an effortless energy that recalls the best works of Otis Redding, Bill Withers and Beggars Banquet-era Rolling Stones. Yeah...it's that good. It's no surprise that most bands today don't record albums live, straight to tape, in one room, no Pro Tools, no auto-tune. There are only a handful of modern artists that can pull it off. Since Ben & The ... |

World Without Tears(more) »rank: 3389by: Lucinda Williams
: :Most artists who appeal to adult listeners tend to settle into a comfortable niche, but Lucinda Williams refuses to play it safe. Instead, her music stings like an open wound, as she continues to strip away the protective layers from her art's emotional core. Though Williams has long been prized for the naked honesty of her music, this collection is even rawer than its predecessors. From the down-and-dirty bar-band blues of 'Atonement' to the Rolling Stones-style swagger of 'Bleeding Fingers' to the tricky balance of debasement and transcendence in 'Ventura,' Williams leaves the nerve endings of her music exposed. With the band opting ... |

Mermaid Avenue Vol. II(more) »rank: 7126by: Billy Bragg & Wilco
: 's Best of 2000:Mermaid Avenue, Vol. II finds Billy Bragg & Wilco setting Woody Guthrie's words to their own music a second time. The result is more sonically diverse than the first installment, but just as rewarding. With guests Natalie Merchant and bluesman Corey Harris lending their voices to this new-century hootenanny, this 15-song disc manages to capture the collective spirit of both IWW and the WTO times. Woody would've been proud of the initial collection; he'd be prouder still of this one. --Steven Stolder Amazon.com:Who knew that after the undeniable, sometimes shimmering, sometimes rustic magic of Mermaid Avenue that there was enough ... |

Celtic Christmas, Vol. 2 [Windham Hill](more) »rank: 4136by: Kevin Burke; Michael O Domhnaill, Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill
: :A lullaby of an album, Celtic Christmas II features two James Galway flute pieces ('The Wexford Carol' and 'I'll Rock You to Rest') that set the tone for this gentle collection. Some of the usual suspects, Nightnoise, folkie Luka Bloom, Capercaillie, Triona Ní Dhomhnaill, and others, appear on the 14-track survey of more Celtic music. Flutes and tin whistles seem to dominate the instrumental range here, underscored by strong vocal performances such as Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill's 'Johnny Seoighe' and of course a lament or two. Would Christmas be any more joyful if it weren't balanced by world-weary ballads, dirges, and heartsick songs? The ... |

Short Sharp Shocked(more) »rank: 4052by: Michelle Shocked
: :The '80s folk revival yielded a diversely talented generation, some reared on the aesthetic and ideology of punk, some on their '60s singer-songwriter predecessors. They were looking for the directness of expression and connection with audience that stripped acoustic music promised. Michelle Shocked built an audience through her strident activist messages and raw, almost naked songs; she had the sincerity that the audience craved. Despite the militant cover--in which a cop is seen choking a protesting Shocked--the record is memorable for its reveries of childhood, its simple sense of hope, and Shocked's minimalist guitar and hoarse, youthful voice. --Roy Francis Kasten |

The two-disc set also includes The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon: A 10th Anniversary Special. In this 40-minute adventure, Dr. Yung invites Misty and Ash to take part in a special tournament on his new battle system. Yung creates formidable Mirage Pokémon from raw data, culminating in a super-version of Mewtwo, the powerful psychic Pokémon from the first features. Once again, friendship and kindness triumph over greed and arrogance, although the special ends with the words, "To be continued..." (Unrated, suitable for ages 8 and older: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Its unlikely that the full impact of the live performances will hit home to viewers unfamiliar with Jay-Z and his Roc-A-Fella Records stable of artists. Another frustration is trying to identify the array of visitors who trade raps on Jays stage. Included in the star-studded lineup are Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Pharell, Ghostface Killah, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and R. Kelly. One unmistakable figure--and we do mean figure--is Jays squeeze Beyonce, who raises the temperature and the roof with her skimpy outfit, flowing hair, soulful yowl, and sexed-up dance routine that leaves her boyfriend and the whole of Madison Square Garden slack-jawed with animal desire.
Twenty cameras captured the event, and some of the most powerful sequences are sweeping moves across the swirling, blissed-out masses as they lip sync along in perfect unison with Jay-Zs complex, profane, quick-witted raps. Less effective are intermittent cutaway segments that show the artist in various studio settings working up beats and rhymes. These amateurish home video breaks may give some insight to Jays perfectionism and dedication to his craft, but they detract from the visceral power of the beautifully executed performance footage. --Ted Fry
