Precious Memories(more) »rank: 118by: Alan Jackson
: :A few decades ago nearly every country singer had at least one--often more--gospel albums in their catalog. Today, aside from gospel veteran Amy Grant, who balances the sacred and secular, and Randy Travis, that concept has long faded. For Alan Jackson, however, treating the musical past as present has been a way of life, as it is with these 15 timeless hymns from his youth. Recorded with just two acoustic guitars and a piano, it was originally a private Christmas present to his mother. The spare instrumentation is surprisingly robust ... |

Let It Go(more) »rank: 218by: Tim McGraw
: :More of a happy-go-lucky artist in his younger days, Tim McGraw here sounds as if he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. After the comparatively lighthearted, irresistibly catchy opening single, 'Last Dollar (Fly Away),' most of the midtempo material that follows ranges from the somber to the morose. There's the night-shift weariness of 'I'm Workin',' the alcohol-drenched heartbreak of 'Whiskey and You,' and the soul-tortured title track. Even a song with the upbeat title 'Put Your Lovin' on Me' has McGraw asking his lover to 'be my ... |

What Am I Waiting For(more) »rank: 251by: Heidi Newfield
: :Formerly the lead singer of Trick Pony, Heidi Newfield steps into the next career chapter with her solo debut, What Am I Waiting For. The album features six tracks co-written by Heidi including the album's crown jewel, Johnny & June. Of the album, Heidi remarks, I really was only interested in cutting a record that was going to step out and have some relevance in this day and age, when we are head-to-toe in pop culture, videos and imagery...we don' t always listen with our ears anymore, we listen ... |

A Place to Land(more) »rank: 411by: Little Big Town
: :If Little Big Town's platinum-selling debut, The Road to Here, found the foursome putting a backwoods spin on both Fleetwood Mac and the Southern California rock scene, the band's sophomore release pays such direct tribute to their heroes that you'd have to have a tin ear not to recognize the very songs that inspired them. Liked Fleetwood Mac's 'Go Your Own Way?' They've got it under the bargain title 'Fine Line.' Loved 'The Chain' and 'Landslide?' They're here, too, but with different titles. Crosby, Stills & Nash's 'Suite: Judy Eyes?' ... |

5th Gear(more) »rank: 375by: Brad Paisley
: :Like his friend Vince Gill, Brad Paisley has achieved the often-difficult feat of reconciling being an entertainer and world-class guitarist. He's proven that on four admirable albums, and 5th Gear follows in that vein. Certainly 'Ticks,' an airy, radio-friendly ditty, is not the true substance here. That comes with such superior fare as the insightful 'All I Wanted Was a Car' and 'Online,' a sly satire of people's Web facades. While his duet with Carrie Underwood ('Oh Love') is a bit cut and dried, Paisley ably handles 'Letter to Me,' ... |

Wide Open Spaces(more) »rank: 473by: Dixie Chicks
: essential recording:The major-label debut from this Texas trio proves their instrumental abilities, blending more traditional twang with slow melodic blues, foot-tapping rockabilly, and bluegrass-inspired pop harmonies. From the opener, 'I Can Love You Better,' the Chicks let their love of music and genuine joy shine through while the energy on this album reminds one of Carlene Carter. Solid musicianship, topnotch vocal performances, and infectious pop hooks make this a stellar project. --Paula Ghergia |

Where the NBA Dynasty series (the other initial entry is the slightly meatier Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete History) outdoes Ultimate Jordan is in the six playoff games--one for each year--as they were originally broadcast, minus halftime and commercials. Having the nearly complete game (usually running 90-100 minutes, from the TV introductions to post-game interviews) means you can skip straight to John Paxson's clutch basket or what was expected to be the final shot of Jordan's career. Or you can savor each game in its entirety, all the better to appreciate the artistry of Jordan in his three-pointer barrage against Portland or his "flu game" against Utah. You can see other great players too, of course, including Jordan's teammates--Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman--and those opponents unfortunate enough to face the Bulls--Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone, and others. Because these are all NBA Finals games, you won't see Jordan's shot over Craig Ehlo or his 63-point coming-out party against Boston, but the 1990s Chicago Bulls were a team for the ages, and merely having their games--some of them all-time classics--available for home viewing is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi

While last-minute heroics tend to be the standard by which we define excellence, there are many other moments that have left an indelible impression, many of them highlighted here. The video clips fall into 10 categories: Dunks, Alley-oops, Assists, Steals, Blocks, Teamwork, the Clutch Shot, Moves, Hustle, and Buzzer-Beaters. At the beginning of each section is a brief introduction. Before showing the top 10 dunks of all time, for example, we learn about the evolution of the dunk--from the first slam to the man who could fly, Michael Jordan--and we hear background commentary from NBA legends such as Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Dr. J, and Bill Russell. This video recalls familiar moments of NBA lore that you will want to own for countless repeat viewings. --Jeremy Storey
