The Ultimate Collection(more) »rank: 2470by: Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
: :Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' 25-cut disc is the single most impressive one of Motown's Ultimate Collection series (which features 17 artists). Combining Smokey's endlessly inventive twists on romance (good and bad) with the Miracles' handful of straight-up party hits, it showcases one of American pop's most sure-footed and touching acts. The frontman's prowess as singer, writer, and producer lights up each of these single mixes; less-celebrated tracks like 'My Girl Has Gone,' '(You Can) Depend on Me,' and 'The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage' stand as tall as the many oldies-radio staples featured here. Late Registration(more) »rank: 1839by: Kanye West
: :For haters eager to see Kanye hit a sophomore slump--no such luck. Late Registration can't replicate the novelty of last year's College Dropout, but otherwise, this is an impressively more mature and labored-over album. Lyrically, Kanye's only improved a notch but musically, the album sounds incredible, especially with co-producer Jon Brion helping polish the songs to perfection. Tracks like 'Heard 'Em Say' (featuring Maroon 5's Adam Levine) and 'Hey Mama,' are richly textured in their soulfulness while the flint-edge of 'Crack Music' and 'Gone' (feat. Cam'ron) will appeal to the street-oriented. There's a few duds on here--the sickly-sweet, syrupy 'Bring Me Down' (feat. ... |

Dangerously in Love(more) »rank: 1783by: Beyoncé
: :The perfect timing of Beyonce Knowles’ career moves continues with the release of her debut solo album. Dangerously in Love’s best music is wildly up-to-date, craftily designed for both maximum street acceptance and positioning as some of the most cutting-edge stuff on current radio. The brash first single, 'Crazy in Love,' melds Jay-Z with an unstoppable Chi-Lites horn sample, shape-shifting into something brand new. Collaborations with Outkast’s Big Boi and Sean Paul also prick up the ears, while changes of pace like 'Be with You' and 'Speechless' achieve their aim with credibility. The disc becomes far too ballad heavy in its second half, ... |

The Preacher's Wife: Original Soundtrack Album(more) »rank: 1661from: Arista
: :By this time in her career, Whitney Houston had a formula sound, and here she leans on it hard, surrounding herself with adult contemporary heavy-hitters like Diane Warren and Babyface. This wasn't the monster her previous records were, most notably The Bodyguard soundtrack, even though it seems to be an overt attempt at satisfying the same audience. Her voice is as crystalline as ever, but overall it seems a somewhat soulless effort, even though the themes are much more secular than she's braved before. --Scott Wilson |

Faith: A Holiday Album(more) »rank: 1737by: Kenny G
: essential recording:Kenny G currently owns the smooth-jazz soprano sax with his popular, mainstream arrangements and compositions. And on his first holiday album, despite occasionally predictable charts and phrasing, the saxman delivers a thoughtful and moving collection of songs, spirituals, and hymns, with his trademark sound wedded to several ensemble and orchestral arrangements. The G-man stretches out in 'Sleigh Ride' and 'Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,' but these are balanced by more serious pieces such as the lovely, original 'Eternal Light ( A Chanukah Song)' and 'Ave Maria.' There's a genuine humbleness and inspired reverence in the playing here--as in, Kenny G ... |

Yes, the unrated edition of The Dukes of Hazzard has nudity... but no, it's not of Jessica Simpson, but topless sorority girls. There are also two sets--"PG-13" and "unrated"--of deleted scenes and bloopers. The four minutes of unrated deleted scenes (supplementing the 25 minutes of "PG-13" deleted scenes) include more sorority girls and a menage à trois for Johnny Knoxville . The five minutes of unrated bloopers (the same amount as the "PG-13" bloopers) feature a few more girls but mostly bad language. Featurettes discuss the Daisy Duke short shorts (and show how you can make your own), car stunts, and the making of the movie (narrated by a cast member of the original TV series). --David Horiuchi
