Vivid(more) »rank: 27093by: Living Colour
: :Living Colour's exceptional debut is strong all the way through--there simply isn't any weak material on this album. Generally classified as hard rock, Vivid also contains touches of funk and jazz to keep things interesting. Living Colour were also one of the few bands of their time to write politically conscious songs that never sound preachy. They take on politicians ('Cult of Personality'), slumlords ('Open Letter'), modern life ('Desperate People,' 'Glamour Boys'), and the gap between rich and poor in America ('Which Way to America?'). Outstanding music and lyrics, and Corey Glover's strong singing, make these songs simultaneously entertaining and thought provoking. The ... |

Tales From the Punchbowl(more) »rank: 57917by: Primus
: :The task: to explain to the uninitiated as well as those in the know what the new Primus record sounds like. Mission impossible. A discourse on quantum physics would probably make more sense. Weird, obviously, is a given. Reading Les Claypool's lyrics and listening to his Elmer Fudd vocals and indescribable slap-and-slash bass, one gets the sense that he's completely immersed in his own strange world. Though the album doesn't exclude the average listener (everyone is welcome!), those without an open mind will certainly feel as if they're missing the punch line of a particularly hilarious in-joke. Lovable and bizarre, Tales from the ... |

Pocket Full of Kryptonite(more) »rank: 8477by: Spin Doctors
:Album Description:Reissue of their 1991 album. Includes 3 live previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'Yo Mamas A Pajama', 'Sweet Widow' & 'Stepped On A Crack'. :As a jam band in the vein of Blues Traveler and Phish, Spin Doctors built a grassroots following by playing anywhere and everywhere. After a live EP caught their early potential, they released this uncharacteristically tight debut album. Featuring several hits that could have appeared on a Steve Miller Band album, Kryptonite became an immediate frat-rock favorite. Thanks to a spotless production, the tight groove of 'Little Miss Can't Be Wrong,' 'Two Princes,' and 'Jimmy Olsen's Blues' immediately connected ... |

Antipop(more) »rank: 13257by: Primus
: :Antipop, indeed. Primus, led by mad genius/bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, enjoyed past radio success with 'Jerry Was a Race Car Driver' and 'Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver.' And on Antipop, Primus's usual staccato freneticism and rhythm-propelled tunes are as compelling, demanding, and provocative as ever. Like Mr. Bungle, another oddball Northern California outfit, Primus's humor is omnipresent, though not in a Weird Al way, despite the fact that Claypool's nasal delivery is not unlike Mr. Yankovic's. Most of Antipop is patented Primus funk-pop, what with a song about 'sniffing paint since the seventh grade' ('Lacquerhead') and the autobiographical title track ('I am the Antipop / ... |

Faith No More - Who Cares A Lot? The Greatest Hits(more) »rank: 35368by: Faith No More
:Album Details:'best Of'collection with Limited Bonus Disc featuring Unreleased Tracks, Demos,& Two Live Tracks from Australia. :A curious coda from a truly peculiar bunch. Who Cares a Lot is the swan song of the most engaging band to come to the fore when the late-'80s and early-'90s funk-punk hordes defiled the land. What set the San Francisco-based quintet apart all the lukewarm Chili Peppers of the time was powerful musicianship (few hard-rock bands could match them onstage in their Real Thing prime) and a contrary disposition. When the sweeping 'Epic' briefly transformed FNM into MTV darlings, they responded by recording their most challenging ... |
