Guys and Dolls (1992 Broadway Revival Cast)

(more) »rank: 4255

by: Frank Loesser, Nathan Lane, Faith Prince, Peter Gallagher, Josie de Guzman

: :This 1992 revival cast rewrote the standard for Guys and Dolls, with costumes and sets decked out in splashy colors, a crack pit band conducted by Edward Strauss, and a perfect cast. In the classic setting of Damon Runyon's tales of the New York underworld, Peter Gallagher and Josie de Guzman excel in their respective roles as the suave Sky Masterson and the innocent but hopeful Sarah Brown, but Nathan Lane and Faith Prince are even better as the hopeless couple Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide. Walter Bobbie brings the house down with the grand showstopper, 'Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat,' and ...

: :A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of 'Broadway: The American Musical' provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other 'best of Broadway' collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing 'Ol' Man River' from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing 'You're the Top'; the title song ...

Guys & Dolls: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Recording (1950 Original Broadway Cast)

(more) »rank: 5155

by: Frank Loesser

: :The original 1950 production of this classic played the mythical Damon Runyon world of New York City gamblers a lot straighter than the 1992 Broadway revival did. In fact, 1950 reviewers called this the 'South Pacific of crapshooters.' Alas, Guys and Dolls plays a lot better as a cartoon-like 'fable' in the 1990s--which is why the revival is probably the definitive recording while this one is more a historical artifact. Still, it's a gas to hear Robert Alda (Alan's dad!) and Sam Levene originate the roles of Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit, while both Vivian Blaine and Stubby Kaye (who actually gets most ...

Somewhere over the Rainbow: The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals

: :The 'Golden Age' referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ('Over the Rainbow,' 'Singin' in the Rain,' 'There's No Business Like Show Business,' etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely 'Puttin' On the Ritz'; ...

: :For those Sarah Brightman fans who didn't spring for The Songs That Got Away when it was a pricey import, this domestic release will be a must-buy. Originally recorded in 1989 shortly after she achieved international fame in The Phantom of the Opera, the album spotlights obscure American and British musical theater songs that either were removed from shows or were 'lost' when the shows themselves slipped out of the repertoire. (Of course, some of the songs aren't nearly as obscure as they were in 1989--the opening track, Stephen Schwartz's soaring 'Meadowlark,' has since been claimed by Liz Callaway, Patti LuPone, and Betty ...

: :Just as new producers had done to Broadway's 1992 revival of Frank Loesser's Guys and Dolls, this Tony-winning revival of Loesser & Burrows's 1961 Pulitzer Prize winner has been transformed into a cartoon-like fantasy, featuring even more satire than was originally intended. Which, after all, is the only way numbers like 'Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm' or 'A Secretary Is Not a Toy' can be played in the post-feminist late '90s. And yet, the original 1961 period piece still remains the better musical recording--because it had both Robert Morse (who, with all due respect to Matthew Broderick, owns the role of Finch) ...
