Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps - The Concert Film

(more) »rank: 10020

starring: Ralph Molina, Frank 'Pancho' Sampedro, Billy Talbot

: :Neil Young's 1978 concert tour, documented in this acclaimed two-hour film that was directed by Young himself (using the pseudonym Bernard Shakey), is a treat for the singer-songwriter's fans. The concept of the show is high (for Young, anyway), if rather odd: roadies (here called 'Road Eyes') decked out like the Tusken Raiders from Star Wars, stage announcements from the original Woodstock during set changes, and giant amps, microphones, and so on for an 'Incredible Shrinking Man' effect. Of course, it's the music that counts, and there's plenty of that, what with nearly 20 songs (including two versions of 'Hey Hey, My My,' ...

:Album Description:Exclusive on off pressing on vinyl limited to 500 copies. This is his solo debut from 2000, recorded in Nashville in 12 days, guest contributions include Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch & Kim Richey. 's Best of 2000:Heartbreaker opens with an argument about a Morrissey song before the band kicks into the sloppy and rollicking 'To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High),' and certainly the gloomster's self-referential sadness hangs over Ryan Adams's songs. But Adams, the notoriously raucous frontman for the defunct Whiskeytown, is a country boy at heart if not in attitude, so there is a lingering pastoral ...

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart - A Film About Wilco

(more) »rank: 11130

starring: Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Leroy Bach, Glenn Kotche, Jay Bennett
directed by: Sam Jones

: :This splendid documentary captures the band Wilco's struggles (both with their record company and within the band itself) while recording their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart is completely engrossing, whether or not you are familiar with the band. As they work on the album, there's some tension between singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy and bandmate Jay Bennett, but overall the band members are happy and enjoying exploring their music. But when they turn in the finished songs, their record label drops them, leaving them adrift with the album that promises to be a huge artistic leap. For fans of ...

by: Emmylou Harris

: :By 1977, Emmylou Harris's Hot Band had truly hit its stride, adding electric-guitar wizard Albert Lee to an already powerful core of Ricky Skaggs, Glen D. Hardin, Rodney Crowell, and Hank DeVito. Harris's mix of material remained eclectic, but surefire, with room for everybody from the Carter Family and the Louvin Brothers to Chuck Berry and Townes Van Zandt, who contributes his masterful 'Pancho & Lefty.' In addition to the requisite Gram Parsons tunes, Harris also gently tackles the country standard 'Making Believe.' --Marc Greilsamer

by: Emmylou Harris

: :Less than two years after her mentor Gram Parson's death, Harris recorded her first album for Reprise. Pieces of the Sky inaugurated a suite of four mid-'70s albums and a surprising number of hits: her sound was clearly traditional, but also tastefully up-to-date with folk-rock and singer/songwriter styles, and her cyrstalline, febrile vocals took standards such as 'Sweet Dreams' and 'If I Could Only Win Your Love' back up the charts. Profile focuses on these early hits, and if it's too brief to capture all the best songs from four-star albums such as Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, and Quarter Moon in a Ten ...

Living and Dying in 3/4 Time

by: Jimmy Buffett

: :Jimmy Buffett's third album, Living and Dying yielded the hit single 'Come Monday,' which still ranks among his finest compositions. As wistful and romantic as that number may be, the dominant feeling of the album is gentle good humor, as on songs like the richly detailed 'Brand New Country Star,' the nostalgic 'Pencil Thin Mustache,' and a recitation of the Lord Buckley tall tale 'God's Own Drunk.' Buffett approaches country & western-style topics on 'Livingston's Gone to Texas' and 'Brahma Fear' without succumbing to the blandness of de rigueur Music City product. 'West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown,' meanwhile, has to be considered the ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
