: :From the first family of gospel comes siblings BeBe and CeCe Winans's First Christmas, recorded in 1993. Slightly dated by a heavy use of synthesizer and the squeaky-slick production prominent in popular gospel and R&B of the late '80s and early '90s, First Christmas is nevertheless right on time in its joyful celebration of the season. Newly arranged versions of classics like Irving Berlin's 'White Christmas,' Handel's 'Joy to the World,' and 'For Unto Us (A Child Is Born)' cozy in with originals 'Give Me a Star,' 'I Love You,' and 'Just Because.' 'The First Noel,' a well-loved public-domain traditional, begins ...

: :In the wake of a prolific outpouring of song, the '90s have been good to soulful belter CeCe Winans. Further evidence of getting better with time is Alabaster Box. While not as cutting edge or musically adventurous as 1998's Everlasting Love, this latest project marks an important shift in this fine sister's stylistic and vocal development. Most evident on the decidedly classic title track, Winans forsakes a trendy dated arrangement for sophisticated piano, strings, and woodwinds. The voice, which has always been impressive, is even more so here, as a new maturity broadens and adds weight to the biggest and most ...

: essential recording:At the height of her creative and vocal abilities in the late '90s, CeCe Winans weighed in heavily with this marvelously accessible collection of R&B-styled contemporary gospel. From the bouncy groove of 'Well, Alright' to the vinyl-like crackle of 'I Am' to the superb breakbeat spiritual of the Lauryn Hill-penned and -produced 'On That Day,' Winans has carved the keys to a city in which both the sacred and secular populations can dance. Twice given the Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year, Winans's voice has a supple and immediate strength without the histrionics of Whitney Houston or ...

: essential recording:While dated by its synthesized keyboard work, Heaven still stands as some of the best work BeBe and CeCe Winans have done. BeBe had a hand in writing each tune, with the exception of Paul Simon's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water.' The interplay of the two voices is striking amid the marriage of popular music's production values and Christian-based lyrics. Additionally, this disc laid a foundation that ushered in a new phase of contemporary gospel, paving the way for solo careers and the likes of Kirk Franklin and Sounds of Blackness. Heaven features longtime compatriot Whitney Houston as guest vocalist ...

Joshua Logan's 1967 film of the hit Broadway musical about the love triangle between King Arthur (Richard Harris), Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave), and Sir Lancelot (Franco Nero) is strong on star emphasis and weak on such fundamentals as story and sets. Except for a handful of solidly dramatic scenes--such as Guenevere grieving, late in the film, for the ruination she and Lancelot have caused--there's not a lot to get excited about. (The story's theme of a lost, great society, however, certainly struck a chord in the 1960s.) The Lerner-Loewe songs ("If Ever I Would Leave You," "Camelot") pretty much sell themselves, even if they are, at best, only proficiently performed in this movie. --Tom Keogh

"The book was better" has been the complaint of many a reader since the invention of movies. Frank Darabont's second adaptation of a Stephen King prison drama (The Shawshank Redemption was the first) is a very faithful adaptation of King's serial novel. In the middle of the Depression, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) runs death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Into this dreary world walks a mammoth prisoner, John Coffey (Michael Duncan) who, very slowly, reveals a special gift that will change the men working and dying (in the electric chair, masterfully and grippingly staged) on the mile . As with King's book, Darabont takes plenty of time to show us Edgecomb's world before delving into John Coffey's mystery. With Darabont's superior storytelling abilities, his touch for perfect casting, and a leisurely 188-minute running time, his movie brings to life nearly every character and scene from the novel. Darabont even improves the novel's two endings, creating a more emotionally satisfying experience. The running time may try patience, but those who want a story, as opposed to quick-fix entertainment, will be rewarded by this finely tailored tale. --Doug Thomas

On the DVD

Listen to our interview with Frank Darabont.
Anyone who has seen this Oscar-nominated film knows Frank Darabont likes to t-a-k-e h-i-s t-i-m-e. He certainly does the same in filling all three hours of his commentary track which he recorded over several sessions. Darabont has studied other DVDs and purposely does not repeat tidbits covered in the excellent new 90-minute documentary on author Stephen King and the making of the film. Other solid segments are two deleted scenes, a never-used teaser trailer, and Michael Duncan Clarke's screen test. The highlight is two remarkable tests of Tom Hanks in old-age makeup. Both are very credible, but it was decided to use another actor. The outcome is a DVD that puts the "special" back into the special edition. --Doug Thomas

When Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) is sent to Jerusalem, one of his assignments is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Marcellus, a cynical and hardened man, wins the robe Jesus wore to the crucifixion while gambling with other Roman soldiers underneath the dying savior. He later becomes convinced that his hallucinations and violent outbursts are the result of a curse received from the robe, which is now in the possession of his escaped slave, Demetrius (Victor Mature), somewhere in the Middle East. He sets out to find Demetrius in order to destroy the robe and the curse and finds faith instead, converting to Christianity. This was the first movie to be filmed in CinemaScope, and won Oscars in 1953 for costume design, art direction, and set decoration. The visual aspects of the film are stunning, and it may be worth viewing for that alone; however, the script and acting leave much to be desired, and you won't find inspiration in these areas if that's what interests you. If, however, you are more interested in this film for its religious matter, the story of the conversion of the hardened Marcellus is inspiring. --James McGrath
