ABBA - Gold: Greatest Hits

: essential recording:Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than 'Voulez Vous' and 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)' for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. 'S.O.S.' has a raw urgency in its chorus, and 'Does Your Mother Know' draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't ...

: :Is there anything that simply screams the 1970s' most indelible pop cultural clichés--the sunny romanticism, perfect vocal hooks, feathered hair, stacked heels, and flared sateen britches--more than the Swedish pop phenomenon Abba? And while many a pundit snootily dismissed them during their prime as some sort of prefabricated aberration, their worldwide popularity peaked somewhere just south of Beatlesmania. Indeed, Abba's music was as finely tooled and crafted as anything to come from a Volvo or IKEA factory--if occasionally more economically potent. This double-disc, 37-track anthology comes neatly on the heels ...

:Album Description:Abba are following in the footsteps of The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson with the Number Ones concept, and we're assuming that the designation applies to charts from around the world. There are 18 songs on the album, but no Abba song ever hit #1 in Canada, 'Dancing Queen' was the only one to do it in the U.S., and seven singles did it in the U.K. So the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest winners must have made a major impact in a number of non-English-speaking territories. A collection ...

by: ABBA

:Album Details:24-bit digitally remastered digipak edition with extensive liner notes, lyrics and includes two bonus songs: 'Elaine' and 'Put on Your White Sombrero'. :Super Trouper is generally considered Abba's finest album. The overheated disco flourishes of Voulez-Vous were dropped and the sequencing was very nearly perfect. What's more, silly lyrics metamorphose into things of wrenching beauty. The overall tone is rather somber--the unraveling of the band members' relationships underscores every track--but as usual Abba turn melancholy into uplifting pop music. This digipack version of the 1981 album includes two extra ...

Far from the listless meanderings of a group on its way out, however, the album is alive with emotion and creativity. The title track fuses a melody reminiscent of the ...

:Album Details:24-bit digital remaster with new liner notes, complete lyrics and two bonus tracks: 'Fernando' (US Remix 1974) and 'Happy Hawaii' (Swedish Version). essential recording:At the height of their success, ABBA were second only to Volvo as Sweden's biggest export earners. Arrival (1977) sees the quartet just finding their stride, after a year of relative obscurity which followed the success of 'Waterloo,' their 1973 Eurovision Song Contest winner. Like their '70s peers ELO, ABBA knew the value of tunes, tunes, tunes. Arrival's hits include the glistening, full-on sheen of ...

Gimme! Gimme! (A Man after Midnight)'. 13 tracks in all. :Voulez-Vous is Abba's Eurodisco album, and if you decide to go there, be ready for some serious histrionics. Typical of the record's wall of sound is 'Does Your Mother Know,' in which the disco pulse leads into power guitar riffs laid out over a boogie piano. The sound is equally mammoth on the title ...

(Forgive them the film.) :Album Details:New 24-bit digital remaster with new liner notes, complete lyrics and bonus tracks: 'Crazy World' and 'Medley: Pick a Bale of Cotton/On Top of Old Smokey/Midnight Special'. :Abba took a risk by launching this 1975 album (their second) with 'Mamma Mia.' How do you possibly follow that up? Simple--wait two songs and then zoom into 'SOS,' one of the best pop songs ever written. The rest of the album does not quite reach those dizzying heights, but it's strong nevertheless. Abba is all over the map, as if the ...

Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi

The Olsen twins are turning 16, and they're celebrating with this collection of party games and, you guessed it, driving lessons. The good news is that if you can help them get past the obstacles and pass the test, they'll take you out with their new driver's licenses to a variety of fun minigame activities, like rock climbing, riding Jet Skis, surfing, ATV quad racing, and shopping for clothes. Earn points in the party games and spend them to upgrade the car and unlock cool tunes and cooler outfits.

It's not very often that a game aims to be fun and realistic while instilling a sense of personal involvement and responsibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winners Circle does that within the theme of horseback riding. Players compete in such equestrian events as dressage, jumping, and cross-country, and learn the basics of caring for a horse. The game offers a practice mode, which lets riders master the controls and explore a course before entering events, and an adventure mode with large forest and island levels where players can play minigames or just simply explore.
